The White Rose Is Now Charlie!

Having been substantially revised since  release of the demo recording of The White Rose in June 2012, the Musical remembering Charlie Howard has a new name to go along with the power that is gained by its new shape. Playwright Bruce Spang and I both feel that the previous name is simply not strong enough to shoulder the weight of the story being told -- and fails to keep the focus on Charlie. The significance of the "white rose petals" that are mentioned a number of times in the show has not lessened; their symbolic power is intact.

You are invited to get to know the music and story of The White Rose. As soon as an updated recording of Charlie! is available, anyone who has purchased a download of The White Rose (at any time) will, on request, be sent a link for a free download of the revision.

The White Rose has never been performed in its entirety, and until such a production is mounted, the only way to know this powerful music and story is to hear the demo!

"… to let you know how much I LOVE your CD, Drawn of Dream. So does my massage therapist… I brought it with me to a recent appointment, and now she wants a copy (which I am going to order for her). Thanks so much for bringing such beautiful music into our lives!"

$5000.00 Grant Awarded by The Davis Family Foundation

We are proud to announce that the Maine-based Davis Family Foundation has generously provided a grant of $5,000 to Pine Tree Performing Arts of Portland, Maine, to support a project promoting The White Rose.

The White Rose is a collaboration between Bruce Spang, Poet Laureate of Portland and long-time chorus member, and Tom Wallace, MGMC's Associate Director and composer-in-residence. Bruce and Tom embarked on the creation of this work after participating in a 2009 ceremony in Bangor, ME marking the 25th anniversary of the death of Charlie Howard.

Portions of the work were presented by MGMC's Touring Ensemble this past July in both Bangor and Portland to rave reviews. The Davis Family Foundation grant funds will support the presentation of portions of The White Rose by the Touring Ensemble before large audiences at the GALA Festival this coming July.

We offer our grateful thanks to the Davis Family Foundation.
